In 2011, Glosten was selected by the University of Maine for their intermediate-scale floating wind turbine demonstration project. Fourteen finalist designs were evaluated by a panel of wind power and offshore industry experts, as well as leading researchers from the US Department of Energy and the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). PelaStar was selected and a full design and analysis were completed, culminating in a shipyard design package. In parallel to this program, the University of Maine completed a 1:50-scale model test program of three floating foundation types, with a TLP design derived from the PelaStar. Key outcomes from this program included verification of the system dynamic behavior in ocean conditions with an operating turbine, confirmation that PelaStar’s mooring tendons are feasible and cost-effective at intermediate and full scale.
